On the surface, Chasing Mavericks looks like it’s simply about a young boy attempting to do something wild and crazy to fulfill some teenage fantasy. But the story is actually based on the real life of surfing phenom Jay Moriarity, played by newcomer Jonny Weston, and his quest to conquer the Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth. In order to make it happen he turns to local legend Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler) to train him to survive.
“In many ways, the film is about connecting with nature, to spirituality, and connecting with another person,” says Butler. ”The connection that grows between Frosty and Jay is the most compelling aspect of the story.”
Of course, the film – in theaters Friday, October 26th – comes with its fair share of adventure as Jay attempts to do something so dangerous and risky. And where there’s adventure, action, and risk, there’s Tory Shulman to have a little fun of her own. While the film in its entirety comes with more emotional depth, the trailer is there to get audiences interested and excited, and that’s where Tory comes in to break it down.
