Everything worth celebrating has its own day or week – Presidents, Independence, secretaries, cookies, dachshunds, pickles. And don’t leave off that list J.R.R. Tolkien and his famous creation, “The Hobbit,” published 75 years ago.
Tolkien Week is currently upon us, and Saturday, September 22nd is Hobbit Day, officially designated so by the American Tolkien Society in 1978. The day marks the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, both said to be born on the same day, different years. To make worldwide festivities a little more special, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, and MGM released a brand new trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first in a trilogy of movies adapting Tolkien’s enormously popular novel.
Returning to the movie, among many, are Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel and Hugo Weaving as Elrond, as well as Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood, plus the incredible Andy Serkis as Gollum, who also served as the Second Unit Director on these new movies, which he talked about at Comic-Con in July.
