When Jonathan Ratliff, my colleague here at The Seven Sees, and I attended a press screening a couple months ago (September 14th, to be precise) of “Straw Dogs” which was opening that weekend from Screen Gems (a division of Columbia Pictures), it was preceeded by what a studio representative told us was a “special preview.” Little did we or most of the audience know,
Oscar® nominated director David Fincher and Oscar® winning composer (for Fincher’s “The Social Network”) and Nine Inch Nails lead singer Trent Reznor were in the theater to see how the 8-1/2 minute trailer, that’s right, 8-1/2 minutes, for their latest collaboration starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” played.
And let me tell ya…did it play. It didn’t take long for those who have read the book to figure out what we were watching. But what was even more exhilarating was when, like the Energizer Bunny, it just kept going…and going…and going! Now, some may
think it showed too much, that they gave away the story (not at all, by the way), but the majority of the audience was left in jaw-dropping awe, desperate for more. In fact, there was a collective, “Whoa!” when it ended.
Shortly after, Columbia Pictures released a condensed version of that trailer, still clocking in at an impressive 3 minutes 43 seconds.
But brace yourselves, because that original, extended trailer is finally getting its day in the spotlight. If this doesn’t make you want to see “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” then I’m not sure anything will. Enjoy!
