It’s a topic dealt with in Silver Linings Playbook starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro, in theaters November 21st. In fact, in the newly released trailer, Cooper and Lawrence talk about the medications Lithium and Seroquel. That trailer and movie seemingly take a more light-hearted approach to mental illness.
But for Jonathan Caouette, it’s no laughing matter at all. His new documentary, Walk Away Renee - available now online exclusively on SundanceNOW’s Doc Club – follows his road trip with his mentally ill mother, both past and present, as he moves her across the country.
As the two encounter roadblocks in the present, the movie takes audiences back, providing insight into this anything-but-ordinary mother/son relationship. Through musical montage, psychedelic sequences and real and imagined circumstance, the film raises questions about love, sacrifice, and the reality in which we live.
